Philanthropic Paths: An Exploratory Study of the Career Pathways of Professionals of Color in Philanthropy (2014)

Abstract

This report is a comprehensive report from an independent study commissioned by the D5 Coalition, exploring the career pathways of professionals of color in philanthropy. It examines how these individuals enter and advance within the sector, the barriers they face, and the factors contributing to their career progression. Key findings include the importance of mentorship, organizational commitment to diversity, and the role of affinity groups in professional development. The study also highlights significant challenges such as limited vacancies, racial stereotypes, and unwelcoming foundation cultures. The report suggests that while career pathways in philanthropy may resemble those in other sectors, unique barriers and opportunities exist for professionals of color, necessitating further research to enhance diversity and inclusion in philanthropic leadership.
