Striving and Thriving: A Life Course Trade-Off? (2022)

Striving and Thriving: A Life Course Trade-Off? (2022)

Abstract

This brief article published in Pediatrics discusses the concept of upward intergenerational mobility, emphasizing its importance in achieving the American Dream and closing racial opportunity gaps. It highlights that mobility should encompass income, education, and health, collectively termed as “striving” (education and income) and “thriving” (health). The document reveals persistent racial disparities, particularly for Black, American Indian, and Latino individuals, in achieving upward mobility across these dimensions. It also introduces the potential trade-off between striving and thriving, where educational and income gains may not necessarily lead to better health outcomes. The report calls for a comprehensive research agenda that includes health assessments and considers structural factors in the of design interventions that support both economic and health mobility, aiming for equity from the start.
